Iconic Dali Inspired Lips Sofa in Vintage Seekers Design

Famously inspired by Mae West’s lips, Dali’s pink, pouting sofa is one of the 20th century’s most iconic furniture designs.

Oct. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- Vintage Seekers is now showcasing this homage to Salvador Dali’s surrealist sofa – a 1980s piece that was custom made for Dutch photographer Paul Huf.

Indicative of the Pop Art era, the Vintage Seekers’ lips sofa was used by Paul Huf for a series of photo shoots in the early 1980s and also used in a TV commercial of Dutch beer brewer Grolsch in 1983.

Including a photo and a letter of authenticity by the widow of Paul Huf, this 1980s lips sofa in Vintage Seekers’ Design category still boasts an high-profile provenance, yet is considerably more affordable than Dali’s five sofas.

The original Dali design was commissioned by Edward James, a wealthy British patron of the Surrealists, in 1936, and he went on to create a whole suite of objects and paintings inspired by Mae West’s appearance. It is thought that only five sofas of Dali’s sofas were made and the artist kept them all. Three are still owned by the Edward James Foundation in West Dean, and two were sold shortly before James's death in 1984. The Brighton Art Gallery and Museum bought one, while Christie’s sold the other in 2003 for £62,140.
