“Junior Natalie Mitchell, Collegian freelancer, spent the first session of summer school at Hillsdale College sneezing and coughing, with a sore throat. She said she thought it was a case of seasonal allergies.”

“When her throat starting closing up over Memorial Day Weekend, she was not so sure.”

“I had difficulty breathing,” Mitchell said. “I thought I could just suffer through it.”

“She drove herself to the E.R. and was given antibiotics for a bacterial infection in her throat. It was similar to what Mitchell had experienced as a child when she was exposed to mold. She was worried her room in McIntyre Dorm was causing the problem.”

“I was really frustrated,” Mitchell said. “All I wanted to do was to knock on Olds Residence and ask if I could go back home there.”

“For most people, the combination of seasonal allergies and dorm interiors does not matter. For “outlier” students like Mitchell however, seasonal or environmental reactions can make life miserable.”

“College staff work hard to monitor and control campus environments to prevent breakouts of mold and other toxins, Vice President of Administration Rich Pewe said, but he added that determining the cause of student illnesses, especially  environmental factors is tricky at best."
