Oct. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Take a character from Harper Lee’s classic 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird, make the story contemporary, and you have the recipe for the blockbuster new book A Row to Hoe.

Jean Louise Finch, better known as the little girl, “Scout,” is now a middle school history teacher in Savannah, Georgia. Jean decides to teach her students about slavery in pre-Civil War America, and provides several slave narratives, believing that such subjects are easier to learn when thought of in terms of positive outcomes. Jean reviews the institution of slavery, the Underground Railroad as well as the Abolitionist movement and racism.

In this relevant and insightful story, one of Jean’s students loses a leg below the knee, only to find that her remaining ankle becomes much stronger, because it must compensate for the inadequacies of her prosthesis. The girl finds that her challenge can be a positive force in her life. A Row to Hoe shows us that with courage, challenges are meant to be overcome.
