More often than not, common sense and tradition is often the best strategy to follow, as the tried and tested methods are fail safe and appropriate, but there are new products that are revolutionary.
Putting carpet in the bathroom for instance is a no-brainer, as wet carpets will get wet and stay wet. It is incredibly difficult to keep bathroom carpets dry and they will start to go mouldy and smell. Once this sets in, it’s likely that you will have to replace the whole floor, floorboards and all. This costly repair can easily be avoided by simply replacing the carpet with tiles as soon as you move in. It is unfortunate that the out-dated practice of putting carpet in the bathroom is beginning to become common place in new built homes as builders and developers look to keep costs down.
As previously mentioned, ceramic tiles are a good alternative. However, real wood floors, which you may think that wood would be a bad idea given its weakness to swelling when exposed to water, can work well in the bathroom. Given the right treatment processes and provided they are well sealed, hardwood floors will look exceptionally decadent and last for years in your bathroom.
It is however, paramount that once fitted, you properly look after your new floor. Especially for solid oak flooring, time needs to be taken to ascertain which treatments are best suited. This may sound inconvenient, but it will save you time and money in the future.
Other areas of the house that would great with oak wood flooring are the hallway and conservatory. It is important to remember that if you do decide to put wooden flooring in the conservatory, that you both move the furniture regularly and keep the blinds closed on exceptionally sunny days. This will help prevent your hardwood from fading. If possible, try to pick lighter shades of wood, as well as pre-guessing the effects of the sun, this also helps to create the illusion of a larger room.
The hallway is also a great place to lay down some natural oak flooring. As the entrance to your house, the classy finish will impress your visitors and leave a lasting impression. It is also proven to raise the value of your house as a wooden floor is generally accepted by potential buyers as somewhat of a blank canvas.
