Samuel D. Gruber to speak on synagogue architecture

Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Samuel D. Gruber, Director of Gruber Heritage Global (Syracuse, NY); President of the International Survey of Jewish Monuments, and Lecturer in Judaic Studies, Syracuse University, will speak on: Arise and Build: American Synagogues  and Jewish Identity at Congregation Beth Israel on Sunday, October 23, 12 noon.

Dr. Gruber is known worldwide as an expert on synagogue architecture, Jewish historic sites, and historic preservation. His talk will focus on how Jews have integrated the synagogue into the American landscape. The illustrated lecture will explore the evolving form and meaning of the American synagogue, especially in the 20th century, as shaped by architects and their congregational patrons.

Gruber is also the author of American Synagogues: A Century of Architecture and Jewish Community (Rizzoli, 2003); Synagogues (Metrobooks, NY, 1999); and of numerous articles and survey reports about Jewish monuments. He writes the popular blog Samuel Gruber’s “Jewish Art & Monuments”. Dr. Gruber received his B.A. degree in Medieval Studies from Princeton University, and his Ph.D. degree from Columbia University in the History of Art and Archaeology.
