For a better return on your energy, install an efficient gas central heating system

It is wise to choose an efficient gas central heating and control it sensibly in order to get the most out of your energy supply.

Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- The majority of UK households have mains gas central heating.

In these ‘wet systems’, as they are called, gas central heating boilers heat water – and circulate via radiators and taps throughout your home.

A small minority of houses aren’t connected to the gas network. In this instance, the gas central heating system uses liquid petroleum or heating oil.

With a gas central heating system, you get a fairly good return on your energy – because gas is an efficient fuel.

New condensing boilers, which use hot flue gases that are wasted in a standard boiler, are highly efficient. Many new ones are 90% efficient.Gas central heating systems have gas pipes that go directly to your home – so no fuel storage is required.

Getting a modern gas central heating system is relatively straightforward.

Ensure the gas central heating company you call has engineers in the Gas Safe Register.

Be aware that gas central heating boilers need be serviced annually in order to ensure they run efficiently and last as long as they should do.

As a fossil fuel, gas produces carbon dioxide when it’s burnt and can’t be considered a clean source of energy.

Controlling your central heating system

Is it sensible to leave central heating systems on or switch it off when no one is in the house?

No, it not sensible to leave it on, although there is a way to solve this problem without having to switch your central heating system on and off all the time.

No it isn’t – although there is a way to solve this problem without having to switch your central heating system on and off all the time.

Having your central heating set to specific times will give keep your water bills down and save on environmental costs.

It’s simple with a gas central heating system to just switch the boiler on and off when you need it – but what’s the point?

Using the central heating timer will control the overall system. In reality, there is an even simpler way.

By installing thermostats on individual central heating radiators you can control each individual room – which is much more beneficial.

Ensure you install a central heating system with copper piping

Using copper piping for gas central heating has several advantages compared to its iron and lead counterparts.

Unlike lead, copper is fairly non-toxic. The problem with iron is that it can get corroded – copper does not.

And, unlike iron and lead, it is both soft and easy to work.

Copper piping for gas central heating is available is different sizes. 8mm and 10mm are for use in microbore gas central heating systems.

For more general connections, such as taps and appliances, 12mm and 15mm pipes are available.

22, 28 and 35mm piping can also be used for longer gas central heating or water supply applications.

By contrast, plastic pipes can easily burst in a gas central heating system.

Many plastic gas central heating pipes can only take 3 Barr of pressure at 92C, but, because the safety valve is set to 3 Barr and the overheat system only trips at 100C on the boiler, the pipe fitting can easily fail – causing a lot of damage.

This is why it is preferable for larger gas central heating companies to use copper piping – although some plastic pipes are better than others.

The pipe would take 10 Barr at 20C and 3 Barr at 92C for short periods. All sealed system boilers get up to and over 3 Barr at temperatures over 100C if the boiler fails.

All safety ‘blow off relief pipes’ in gas central heating must be metal for this reason.
