Follow on Google News | Former Homeless Veteran Completes Half of 1460 Mile Walk to Raise Awareness for HomelessnessStephen T. Millhouse is walking 1460 miles to fight hunger and homelessness and has completed one half of his walk this weekend. Mr. Millhouse left Missoula, MT on August 3rd for Los Angeles, CA, and has walked all 730 miles to Mill City, NV.
By: Lena Zappia Upon entering Nevada, Mr. Millhouse became acquainted with a former homeless woman who shared her experiences with him. Commenting on this conversation, he states, “[She] is a survivor in so many ways and she understands just how tough it can be when you are homeless. I know for myself that part of this project is about saying thanks to those who helped me by paying it forward, and I suppose this project also provides the opportunity for others to pay it forward.” Mr. Millhouse has also met with people at Friends in Service Helping, a food pantry in Elko, NV and learned about the services provided by the Samaritan House, a local homeless shelter. The second half of his march to fight homelessness will include increased fundraising efforts and a challenge aimed at breaking down homelessness stereotypes. “I want to challenge people of means to try walking in the shoes of the poor, the hungry, and the homeless. I am not going to ask that you sleep on the street or take on a week long fast or anything remotely dangerous, but I am going to ask that put your ego in neutral, leave your pride at home and go out into your community and ask for help. I want this challenge to be practical, informative and fruitful in a number of different ways. It should be useful to you in terms of learning what it feels like to have to ask for help, yet it will be useful to the hungry and the homeless because I want you to ask for money [and donate it to a pantry, shelter or similar organization] Stephen Millhouse is expected to arrive in Los Angeles, CA by the end of November. About The Going the Distance Foundation The Going the Distance Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in July 2011 by Stephen T. Millhouse. Headquartered in Missoula, Montana, our mission is to create and execute unique projects that raise awareness and funds for social justice issues. The My One Man March (MOMM) is the Foundation’s kick-off fundraising event, in which Stephen Millhouse is walking 1,460 miles — the average number of miles a homeless person walking in a year in search of food, shelter and healthcare services — from Missoula, MT to Los Angeles, CA in order to raise $1 million for successful and committed programs addressing hunger and homelessness in America. Money raised will be granted back to identified programs in the four states through which Mr. Millhouse is walking (MT, ID, NV, and CA) and others.
