Allegro School of Dance and Music to Present “The Nutcracker”

The Allegro School of Dance and Music will present its twenty-third annual performance of “The Nutcracker” on November 25 and 26 at the Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall. This latest production infuses new choreography into a time-old story.

Sept. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Rochester, Minn. – The Allegro School of Dance and Music will present its twenty-third annual performance of “The Nutcracker” on November 25 and 26 at the Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall.
The performance will be under the direction of Katherine Cook and guest director Kennet Oberly. “Kennet has incredible experience as both a dancer and director,” Cook said. “He has worked with professional companies all over the world. His level of expertise in the world of dance, combined with his ability to tell a great story through dance, creates a wonderful opportunity for our cast members and the entire community,” she said.
“We are breathing life into the traditional tale with an innovative storyline and fresh yet classical choreography,” Cook said. “Audience members of all ages will twirl, waltz, dream and grow with Maria in this traditional yet innovative holiday story.”
“The Nutcracker” will have seventy-five cast members. The leads for the production are Olivia Stellmaker as Maria, Leah Folpe as Estella, Maggie Mynderse as Fritz and Katie Hoelzer as Jonathan.
Tickets are available for purchase at the Mayo Civic Center box offices. Admission is $21. Performances will be at 4 p.m. on November 25 and at 1 and 4 p.m. on November 26. Background
Katherine Cook, a Rochester native, holds her B.S. degree in both Dance and Communication from the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point. She has trained nationally and internationally with companies such as the Sydney Dance Company (Sydney, Australia), Zenon Dance Company and School (Minneapolis), Mark Morris Dance Group (Brooklyn, New York), Steps on Broadway (New York City) and most recently the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters (Chicago). In 2008, Cook danced professionally with the Ray Terrill Dance Group in Minneapolis, performing for the Minnesota Fringe Festival, Dances at the Lakes, and Ray's thirtieth anniversary concert. Other performance credits include Oprah's twenty-fourth season kick-off party, and various projects with Revival Dance Group of Rochester. Locally, Cook was the Artistic Director of Children's Dance Theatre from 2005-2008. She has choreographed for The Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale (“A Nutcracker Party” 2007), Rochester Community and Technical College (the Who's “Tommy” and “Candyfreak”), and Wordsplayer's Theatre (excerpts of “Hello, Dolly!”).  In addition to directing “The Nutcracker,” Cook currently teaches ballet and tap at Allegro School of Dance and Music.
