History of Nanticoke Told Through Photographs

Local author pens new book on this Luzerne County city

Sept. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Nanticoke from local author Chester J. Zaremba. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images and memories of days gone by.

In June 1748, eighty Nanticoke Indians grounded their canoes in a wilderness along the Susquehanna River in the area that would later be named Nanticoke. While it was first a farming area, coal was later discovered, and by 1825, the first coal mine was in operation.

Nanticoke owes its chief growth to the anthracite industry, which provided employment opportunities for thousands of European immigrants. Through their labor and strong work ethic, they established a superb city in which to live a full life. They also left behind a magnificent history of their times. Those times have been preserved in pictorial form and evoke fond memories of Nanticoke.

Highlights of Nanticoke:
•   The photographs in Nanticoke all come from the holdings of the Nanticoke Historical Society and represent only a portion of the history that has been preserved.
•   Many of the photographs have never been published before.
•   Readers will see and recall the many businesses that once lined the Main Street.
•   All of the profits from the sale of the book will go to the Nanticoke Historical Society to support its ongoing mission to preserve the history of the city.
