Sept. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Managing and reducing carbon emissions was a key topic at this year’s Energy Event, and one speaker, chief executive of Haven Power Peter Bennell, urged businesses to ensure their own energy strategies were in line with environmental targets.

Now more topical than ever, renewable energy is of great interest to businesses, who are under increasing pressure to reduce their carbon output – but are they responding to these pressures? Peter highlighted the urgent need for companies to address their energy plans and also commented on how Haven and parent company Drax were responding to energy policy to help businesses meet environmental targets.

As Drax’s supply arm, Haven is in a strong position to help businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their business by offering Climate Change Levy exempt energy, generated from sustainable biomass, at no extra cost to power generated from traditional fuel sources.

“The changes in energy policy create an uncertain time for procurement professionals, who are finding it increasingly difficult to budget and plan due to the price impacts the policy initiatives bring,” Peter told his audience. “Businesses need to re-visit their energy strategy now to assess whether it meets their own needs optimally.

“As a supplier, we have to become more active in ensuring we go beyond just getting businesses to sign up to our contracts. It was encouraging to hear the other speakers committing to being energy partners, not just suppliers and stressing the need to guide business customers through these changes. If we work together and encourage a dialogue between suppliers, customers, and policy-makers, we have a better chance of keeping bills and carbon emissions low.”

Peter revealed that Drax’s biomass facilities were continuing to develop, with research and development progressing well. However, he added that the regulatory framework is critical to incentivising further significant investment to transform Drax into a predominantly renewable generator.
