Sept. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- On September 26, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Safety Communication reporting that it “remained concerned” about the potential increased risk of blood clots associated with the use of birth control pills containing drospirenone, which is a synthetic progestin ingredient found in Yaz, Yasmin, Safyral, Beyaz, Zarah and Ocella.

An FDA-funded study involving 800,000 women revealed a 1.5-fold increase in the risk of blood clots, also known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), for women who use drospirenone-containing birth-control pill, compared to users of other hormonal contraceptives.

As a result, the FDA advises the following to women who take drospirenone-containing birth-control pills:
•   Be informed of the potential risk for blood clots.
•   Do not stop taking your birth control pill without first talking to your healthcare professional.
•   Discuss any questions or concerns about your birth control pill with your healthcare professional.
•   Know that risk factors that increase the risk of a blood clot include smoking, being overweight (obesity), and family history of blood clots, in addition to other factors that contraindicate use of birth control pills.
•   Know the symptoms of blood clots, including persistent leg pain, severe chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath. Contact your healthcare professional immediately if you develop any of these symptoms.
•   Side effects from the use of birth control pills should be reported to the FDA MedWatch program at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-....

Attorney David Ennis recommends that women who have taken drospirenone-containing birth control pills and experienced any of these symptoms should first immediately consult with their physician.  Next, the patient should fill out a MedWatch Form at www.fda.gov.  Lastly, patients should seek the opinion of an experienced lawyer to explore their legal rights.
