Chitose Abe was born in 1965 and is the former knit designer of Comme des Garçons. She has quietly been creating Sacai womenswear collections since 1999, having worked for Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe before that. Her knitwear-based collections have built an underground following with very little publicity at the begining. Although keeping away her collection from the fashion’s spotlight, quietly her collection was garnering a global fan after she presented her AW2010 collection in Paris.
The brand has grown to include menswear, is now stocked at some of the most high profile fashion boutiques and stores worldwide including Colette in Paris, and its womenswear line showed its second AW2011 collection in Paris earlier this year.
Remarkably, the brand has managed to stay away from the glare and pressure of centre stage in the fashion domain. Honing her craft at Comme des Garcons, Abe showed flair for incorporating mixed textures, something she has developed in her collections for Sacai. Sacai's clothing has managed to gain and maintain a strong following proving that Abe's success is not a flash in the pan nor something commercial and over-hyped.
Her latest SS 2012 menswear collection is offering 21 looks that stuck closely to the brand’s creative message of "design built upon the everyday”.
