Sept. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Harris-Stowe State University will hold a special naming ceremony for its Midtown campus, Friday, September 30, 2011, at 9 a.m. The university is honoring outgoing president Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. by naming the main campus, located at 3026 Laclede Avenue the “Henry Givens, Jr. Campus.”

“This is a great honor for the Harris-Stowe Board of Regents to bestow upon me,” said Dr. Givens. “This really says a lot about the accomplishments and growth that we have experienced during my tenure as president. To leave my post with the campus that I have been committed to for the past 32 years named for me, is something that I could have never foreseen, and I will forever be humbled by this extraordinary gesture.” Dr. Givens is retiring as president of the University on September 30, 2011.

A native St. Louisan, Dr. Givens has been president of Harris-Stowe State University since 1979. Under his leadership, the University has greatly expanded its degree programs, tripled its enrollment, increased its facilities from one building to eight and changed its status from college to university. These changes include the new state-of-the-art William L. Clay, Sr. Early Childhood Development/Parenting Education Center; the Rev. Dr. William G. Gillespie Residence Hall and Student Center, the institution’s first on-campus housing in its long history of more than 150 years; and a second, the Freeman R. Bosley, Jr. Residence Hall and Dining Facility, which opened this fall. Additionally during Dr. Givens’ tenure, Harris-Stowe opened the Anheuser-Busch School of Business at a satellite campus in South St. Louis.

The celebration will take place under the U.S. Bank Entryway Arch off of Compton Avenue, right before Harris-Stowe’s annual Homecoming parade. The public is invited to attend this historic event.

Harris-Stowe State University, located in midtown St. Louis, is a four-year institution that offers 14 degree programs in the areas of Accounting, Business Administration, Biology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Health Care Management, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Information Sciences and Computer Technology, Mathematics, Middle School Education, Professional Interdisciplinary Studies, Secondary Education and Urban Affairs. Ranked by U.S. News as one of America’s Best Colleges in the Midwest, the university, which has been in existence for more than 150 years, offers the most affordable bachelor’s degree in the metropolitan area.
