Award Winning Digital Agency Creates Interactive Dracula Comic for ‘The Gadget Show’
Cyber-Duck work with popular Channel 5 TV programme ‘The Gadget Show’ to produce an interactive Dracula Comic.
In June of this year, Cyber-Duck’s Production & Marketing Director Matt Gibson was contacted by The Gadget Show to help with the latest of their weekly challenges. Gadget Show presenter Ortis Deeley had a vision to design an interactive web comic and after conducting some research on who best to recruit for his latest challenge, a web comic named “Dead on Arrival” caught his eye. The interactive comic was produced by Cyber-Duck Production Director Matt Gibson along with fellow interactive producer Geoff Gaviria, and won them a prestigious British Interactive Media Association Award back in 2007.
Cyber-Duck set about designing an interactive web comic of the classic Bram Stoker novel, Dracula. Cyber-Duck took the first few chapters of Dracula and brought it into the 21st century using interactive story paths, animation, audio, QR codes and augmented reality to make the comic as interactive, engaging and hopefully scary as possible.
The comic was based on the same storyline as the novel, but the visuals were centred on Gadget Show presenter Ortis Deley becoming Dracula. Cyber-Duck used photos of Ortis and combined them with custom made graphics to bring a level of personalisation to the comic. Cyber-Duck also made use of parallax scrolling to create a 3D illusion on certain comic frames.
As part of the process, Ortis along with his Gadget Show camera crew visited the previous Cyber-Duck offices in Borehamwood and spent time filming the feature, which included interviews with Cyber-Duck’s Matt Gibson and Jerome DeFreitas who were both heavily involved in the project.
Prior to the screening of the programme, Cyber-Duck’s Matt Gibson said “It was a real privilege to be asked to be involved with an episode of the Gadget Show. Working with Ortis and his team was great fun and we believe we managed to draw on a range of award winning Cyber-Duck expertise from across the team to create a brilliant interactive comic, capable of winning the challenge.”
The programme was first aired at 8pm on Friday 23rd September, but if you missed it, you can still catch the episode online using Demand 5.
