Evil Dead Screening Sugartown Vintage Boutique, located at 114 Partition St in the historic village of Saugerties, NY, will be hosting a screening of the cult classic the Evil Dead on October 22 at 7:30pm. The Evil Dead screening will be hosted by Brian Solomon, the writer and creator of the award nominated blog, The Vault of Horror. The screening will coincide with the second annual Village Invasion- Crawl of the Dead, which will kick off in the village of Saugerties at 7:00pm and will continue through the night, or until the undead drop. This event is free to attend. The Village Invasion The first Village Invasion of Saugerties took place October 16, 2010. The idea for the event came from the wonderful Cruella Moxham, better known as Captain Cruella, who wanted to take the concept of the pub crawl and add a horror movie flavor. Captain Cruella joined forces with many of the local businesses which opted to stay open late and participate in the crawl by offering delightfully horrific specials. These businesses included Dave’s Coffee House, Inquiring Mind’s Bookstore, the Partition Street Wine Shop, Lucky Chocolates and many more. Along with the town specials, prizes were also offered for Best Zombie Pin-Up, Best Celebrity Zombie Look-Alike and Best Executed Zombie. “This is all about having fun, and hopefully helping local businesses to attract new customers along the way,” says Captain Cruella. This year’s invasion will take place on October 22, 2011 starting at 7:00pm. Many of the local stores who participated in the first event are excited to do it all again, and the list of local businesses participating has grown, which means even more zombie-filled excitement. This year is slightly different from last because this year Captain Cruella is combining this amazing event with a donation drive for the Hurricane Irene victims of the Hudson Valley. There will be select drop-box locations along the route for toiletries, non-perishables, and clothing. So come join the undead shennanigans and help support those effected by Hurricane Irene. About host Brian Solomon Brian Solomon is a marketing/social media guru by day, and the creator and writer of the award-winning blog, The Vault of Horror (http://thevaultofhorror.blogspot.com/ About Sugartown Vintage Boutique Sugartown Vintage Boutique is a vintage clothing shop located at 114 Partition Street in historic Saugerties, NY. Saugerties is a historic part of the Catskills region of the upper Hudson Valley and is full of culture and charm. Founder and sole proprietor of Sugartown, Ms. Ashley Drewes is a fellow supporter of the undead and is happy to host the screening in her store. Since Sugartown opened last November, they were unable to participate in last years’ zombie crawl, but they are more than happy to take part in all the undead festivities that are planned for this year. The screening will take place in the store beginning at 7:30pm. Sugartown will also be stocked with zombie attire beginning in early October for those that need a little help completing their zombie look. Despite the damage caused by hurricane Irene, Sugartown, along with the town of Saugerties, is going strong and looking forward to seeing all of you at the Evil Dead screening. Historic Saugerties, NY “On April 27, 1677, New York's Governor Andros signed an agreement with the Esopus Indian Kaelcop, chief of the Amorgarickakan family, to purchase "a place called Sagiers" for a blanket, a piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread, and some coarse fiber to make socks.” (http://village.saugerties.ny.us/ Saugerties is an authentic historic town which still has much of it’s original architecture including the lighthouse and the Kiersted House. The Saugerties Saugerties Historical Society Museum, located at the Kiersted House, showcases and preserves the town’s history and culture. This year, 2011, marks the Bicentennial of the Village of Saugerties. The town has many events planned to celebrate this commemorative event such as a Saugerties Grand Gala, the Songs and Stories of the Hudson Valley, a Kids and Families day, a “Shine on Saugerties” auction, and many more. Origin of Zombie Crawls The first Zombie Crawl on record took place in Sacramento, California on August 19, 2001. The event was created by Bryna Lovig, who thought of the idea as a way to promote The Trash Film Orgy’s annual midnight film festival. The event was a huge success and has since become an annual event. The large success of zombie films in the mid-2000’s such as Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, and Dawn of the Dead, lead to an exponential increase in zombie popularity, which no doubt lead to an increased number of zombie crawls across North America and around the world. Since then the undead phenomenon has gained recognition and gathered more followers due to the numerous zombie crawls and the new-found mainstream popularity which is helped by numerous zombie films and the new AMC television series, The Walking Dead.
