Sept. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Miss Black California Constance Reese takes a moment to commemorate Sickle Cell Disease Awareness month this September and she could not be more excited.    “Sickle Cell is a hereditary blood disease that affects the red blood cells” Reese says.  Her own mother battles the disease which is why Constance chose it as her platform, bringing awareness to the cause throughout her reign.  “Sickle Cell Disease is not something that is widely discussed but communication is crucial.  Ultimately, I hope there will be a universal cure one day, but in the meantime-I would love for people to start an open dialogue, go out and get tested to find out if they carry the trait, and I encourage others to donate blood and bone marrow” she says.  Miss Reese is actively promoting just that this weekend when she travels to Oakland for the Blood Centers of the Pacific 101 Heroes Blood Drive.
Miss Black California will be on hand to participate in the festivities and personally thank patrons and volunteers for their actions.  “Sickle Cell patients often need blood transfusions so having heroes donate blood and help save lives is a vital necessity.  I can not thank Mr. Fred McFadden and the staff of the Blood Centers of the Pacific enough for caring and for asking me to be apart of this 101 Heroes Blood Drive” Constance remarks.  “I also want sickle cell patients and their families to know that I admire their strength, resilience, and determination.  You definitely have a friend, advocate, and prayer partner in me and I continue to be amazed by your stories and triumphs” she adds.  It is overwhelmingly clear that this beauty queen is much more than a pretty face; her sincere connection to bringing awareness to the cause is evident in both her words and actions.
According to the CDC, Sickle Cell Disease affects approximately 100,000 people in the country.  Reese does her part to shed light on this information through volunteerism and traveling the state while speaking out about the topic.  She finds joy in celebrating sickle cell survivors while remembering those who are no longer with us.   “We can all do something to make a difference and if you are not sure how to go about making a contribution to the cause, please contact the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California” she states. She is a spokesperson for the Foundation which distributes information about Sickle Cell as well as provides assistance to patients and their families.  For more information about Miss Black California 2011-Constance Reese, the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California, or the 101 Heroes Blood Drive to Celebrate Sickle Cell Awareness month please visit http://www.missblackcalifornia2011.com.
