Cancer victims – Riding the long silent road for them.
Cancer sufferers are increasing in number. By using a bicycle to raise funds and awareness for this vicious disease, I hope to raise awareness for people suffering from cancer. Living in Africa, many cancer victims are overlooked.
I am a person, who has seen the effects of cancer first hand. A good friend of mine has recently passed away from this disease, cancer. It has destroyed his family life, and any future that his little daughter had with her father. He was a great athlete who had dreams of running a great marathon time in Namibia for his age group.
He and I planned a couple of months ago to undertake this cycle journey from Windhoek Namibia to Durban in South Africa approximately 2500 kilometres. I was to do the riding, and he would support me from home. We were hoping to raise funds for the Cancer Association of Namibia By this initiative to aid cancer sufferers like him and others. However, the cancer spread rapidly, and claimed his life. To continue our dreams of fund-raising, I am by embarking on this solo journey by bicycle. I am starting to ride in the next week and you can follow me of visiting my site.
I feel that we all are capable of helping people in need, at some stage of our lives and particularly people with cancer. This disease is striking at people at a much younger age than ever before. By using a bicycle and talking to schools, en route, I hope to instil a desire to for children to be active in their lifestyles and thus hopefully combat and prevent cancer later. As children are doing less of a sport in the daily lives, I feel that cancer can somehow be reduced through a physically fit population.
I have a website http://www.fathersinmotion.org , whereby I will update my cancer riding projects and explaining why I am doing this. So please feel free to visit my site, and read all about this worthwhile project.
