Sept. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- For most Bristolians the mention of anything Gert Lush epitomises anything to do with living in the biggest city in the West.

So in honour of this well known colloquialism, the city’s only adult hospice has launched a new challenge that is set to capture the imagination of the locals while helping raise vital funds for the charity.

Called the Gert Rush challenge the event has been organised by St Peter’s Hospice and will test the stamina of the most assiduous fitness fanatic.

Taking place on Saturday 3 December those daring enough to take part will be asked to run up the 380 steps of Castlemead, the city’s tallest building. The challenge offers a chance to either race against the clock individually, or as a group of five with prizes for those who finish first, second and third fastest.

With backing from Bristol Rugby Club the hospice is now calling on all Bristolians to see if they can beat the current record which is held by the building manager for Castlemead, Neil Munro-James who recorded a time of two minutes and 50 seconds.

Jo Gibbons said: “Many things in Bristol are Gert Lush but this is Bristol first ever ‘Gert Rush’ and we want as many people to get behind it.

“It’s also going to be a lot of fun for those who do decide to have a go. We’re always looking for new ways to raise funds for the charity and we hope loads of people will take part.

“We also want as many businesses to enter a team so we can find out which is the fittest and fastest in the city.

“We can all see the building and many of us drive past it everyday so it makes sense to make the most of the fact that it’s the tallest building in Bristol.

“And with the challenge taking place near to Christmas it’s a great reason to get fit in time for the festivities as well as raising funds for the hospice.”

Located in the centre of Bristol on Penn Street, Castlemead spans over 18 floors.

As Bristol’s only adult hospice St Peter’s Hospice cares for local people with incurable diseases, giving them a better quality of life. All care is provided free of charge but the NHS contribute just 23% of the £6 million needed to run the hospice yearly, meaning events like the half marathon are essential.

Last year the hospice cared for 2,000 patients in the region and supported over 6,000 family members, including children.

The Money raised by The Gert Rush challenge will go towards improving the lives of patients and offering support to their families and loved ones.

To find out more call (0117) 915 9300 or visit the St. Peter’s Hospice website at www.stpetershospice.org. To take part costs £10.
