Sept. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- MIAMI, FL –  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched the Million Hearts campaign this week to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years.

Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute in Miami, a leading cardiovascular institute in the United States, supports the initiative to bring together existing efforts and new programs to help Americans live longer, healthier, more productive lives.

Dr. Jonathan Fialkow, who is board certified in cardiology and clinical lipidology and medical director of EKG, Stress Lab and Cardiac Rehabilitation at Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, has seen healthy living save lives.

“It’s doable. Our patients who eat better diets, stop smoking and get regular exercise have added years to their lives. If more physicians push prevention as much as we do at Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, then good results are bound to happen,” Fialkow said.

The Million Hearts campaign targets half of U.S. adults who have at least one of three main risk factors for heart disease: uncontrolled hypertension, uncontrolled high levels of LDL cholesterol and are smokers. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. More than 2 million Americans have a heart attack or stroke and more than 800,000 of them die, according to the HHS.

More information about the Million Hearts Initiative can be found at millionhearts.hhs.gov and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, www.cdc.gov.

Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute offers a multidisciplinary team approach to preventing, diagnosing, and treating cardiovascular disease. The Institute's philosophy-to treat the entire cardiovascular system as a single entity sets it apart from other medical centers that treat the heart and circulatory system separately. Housing state-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation areas, as well as the most advanced endovascular suites in the world, the Institute remains an internationally renowned center of excellence in cardiovascular care.
