Dealing With Pesky Photo Eye Problems

The biggest problem in the garage door industry has little to do with garage doors themselves. It has to do with photo eyes.

Sept. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- It may come as a surprise to many, but the biggest problem in the garage door industry has little to do with garage doors themselves.

It’s the photo eyes, not the garage door, most people in the industry have had to worry about.

The photo eyes indicate whether a garage door is operational or not, which most dealers claim costs them the most time to fix, repair and adjust.

The smallest thing can throw a photo eye out of whack and cause the garage door to be inoperable.

Dust from cleaning the garage, the broom or a tricycle may hit one of photo-eyes, a bit of paint on the lens or even a spider can easily skew the signal beams and cause the door to quit working.  Sunlight on a sensor can be debilitating as well.

In an informal survey with installers and some builders, Martin Door Manufacturing of Salt Lake City, found installers have more callbacks for photo eyes than any other area of the garage door.

In trying to keep your garage door operable, homeowners are encouraged to clean the lens on their photo eyes on a regular basis, and also make sure the signal beam from the two eyes is properly aligned.  A blinking sensor on one of the eyes usually means the alignment is out of whack and needs to adjusted.
