James Dicks, FL ESGR Vice Chairman (In Training) Honors the FL League of Cities
James Dicks, Vice Chairman (In Training) of the Florida Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (FL ESGR), takes part in honoring the Florida League of Cities
ESGR is a Department of Defense national committee that works with employers, reservists, military leadership, and volunteer organizations to develop and promote a culture in which U.S. employers support and value their employees’ service to the nation through their service in the Guard and Reserve. This is accomplished through the guidance of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).
USERRA protects service member’s reemployment rights when they return from an extended period of military service (including members of the Guard and Reserve) and prohibits employer discrimination based on military service or obligation.
James Dicks, CEO of Information Defense Systems and Florida ESGR Vice Chair (In Training), said after the presentation, qcsed “The Florida League of Cities is an amazing group and I can’t thank them enough for their dedicated support to ESGR and the American military. These city governments have really gone the extra mile to assist in supporting the livelihood of these brave men and women who have served our nation in the National Guard and Reserves.”
Not only is the Florida League of Cities (FLC) the first such League in the country to have 100 percent of its members execute an SOS, the Board of directors unanimously voted to support the FL ESGR Employment Initiative by passing a resolution to have its membership register on the ESGR employee job registration site to give priority to our National Guard and Reserve veterans and encourage its membership to work with their local Chambers of Commerce to join them in this effort. FLC, through Mayor Joy Cooper and the entire organization, lead the way in support of ESGR.
It has never been more important than it is today to protect the jobs of our military based on the current state of the national economy and employment situation. Estimates project that nearly 16 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans are unemployed upon return from their military service, much higher than the national jobless rate. Veteran advocates predict that this rate could rise even higher as the U.S. Military begins winding down operations in Afghanistan and thousands of vets begin returning home searching for work.
