Siler City Special Needs Dance Group Celebrates with Annual Prom NightTuesday September 13 at the Sage Academy in Siler City, the Tuesday Night Dance Group for special needs people holds its annual Prom Night. Up to 150 are expected for this professionally DJ'd, catered and photographed event.
Sept. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Siler City, NC - Tuesday September 13, at 7 p.m., the Tuesday Night Dance Group for people with intellectual disabilities is holding its annual Prom Night. Up to 150 are expected to come.
Once a year this dance group for people who share an intellectual handicap holds Prom Night. The mother of a special needs child has made corsages for all the girls and women. A professional DJ will play the music and a professional photographer will take pictures. Catering will be provided by Raleigh caterer, Catering by Design. Catering by Design has donated catering on Prom Night for several years now. "Joe and the other parents in the group are really good people," said Chef Greg Lewis, owner of Catering by Design, "What they do is important and makes a huge difference in the lives of many people - special needs children and adults, other parents, mentors and caregivers. We're glad to help." Meeting every Tuesday night, except for three, in the last 18 years, almost 1000 Tuesday nights, The Tuesday Night Dance Group has provided welcome social activities for special needs people of all ages and their parents and caregivers. Founded by Lois Garner, the mother of a special needs child, to create needed community and fun for children of special needs, the event has grown to include anyone from the age of 10 to 80. Snacks are served every night they meet. Joseph Ellen, is a part of The Tuesday Night Dance Group in Siler City. His is the father of two young adults, a daughter married to a service man in Germany, and his son Josh. Josh, a young man in his thirties, has an intellectual disability, but that doesn't stop him from being the weekly DJ for the dances. Special Olympics Coordinator for Chatham County for near 12 years, Joseph Ellen is devoted to this community. He is certified to coach for Special Olympics in three sports, and coaches for teams every weekend of the year. When asked about when the Special Olympics was held, Joseph Ellen answered, "Every weekend of my life. People don't realize that we practice year round. Every team has to qualify and then qualify some more to be eligible to play in the state-wide events." He has just recently retired from the role of Special Olympics Coordinator, but continues on as a coach and as part of the Tuesday Night Dance Group. "I like my guys - my men and women. We have a really good time together, ALL the time." Joseph Ellen said.
