Foodgrains Procurement Policy – PDS Gaya

Sept. 12, 2011 - PRLog -- In an attempt to make the people become aware of Public Distribution System Better, PDS Gaya decides to make all information related to Food and Public Distribution available to its people. As a step the authority tried to make Foodgrains Procurement Policy known to its people.

According to the existing policy of foodgrains procurement, the Central Government extends price support to paddy, wheat and coarse grains through the FCI and State Agencies. All the foodgrains conforming to the prescribed specifications offered for sale at specified centers are bought by the public procurement agencies at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The producers have the option to sell their produce to Food Corporation of India or State Agencies at MSP or in the open market as is advantageous to them. Foodgrains procured by the State Governments and their agencies are ultimately taken over by the FCI for distribution through out the country.

The objectives of foodgrains procurement by Government Agencies is to ensure that farmers get profitable prices for their products and do not have to resort to distressed sale, to upkeep the Targetted Public Distribution System and other welface schemes of the Government so that subsidized foodgrains are made available to the poor and needy and to build up buffer storage of foodgrains and ensure foodgrain security.

The authority made the people know about the procurement of rice under levy system. It is placed that rice can also be procured by the Government through statutory levy on rice millers and rice dealers. The percentage or share of levy rice is fixed by the State Government with the approval of Central Government keeping in view the requirements for the central pool, domestic consumption and marketable surplus. And the prices of levy rice are fixed by the Government of India prior to the commencement of every Kharif Marketing Season.

This will make the people aware of the price of foodgrains and know that they are provided the same at a price they should be.
