Sept. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Thyroid cancer is a cancer that forms in the thyroid gland.  This butterfly shaped gland located just below the “Adam’s apple” produces the hormones that help regulate the body’s metabolism, heart rate and blood pressure.

Statistics are showing that the cases thyroid cancer are going up.  Is it because of better technology, better self awareness or because of the environment?

There are four main types of this cancer, papillary, medullary, follicular, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.  Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common of the thyroid cancers.  Thyroid cancer will affect women more than men by a ratio of 3:1.  According to the National Cancer Institute it was estimated that 44,670 men and women (10,740 men and 33,930 women) would be diagnosed with and 1,690 men and women would die of cancer of the thyroid in 2010.  Estimated new cases and deaths from thyroid cancer in the United States in 2011: 48,020 new cases and 1740 deaths.

By looking at these numbers the prognosis and survival of this cancer is very good.  Therefore it is very important to do self examinations of the neck area.

But what will happen once you have found a lump on your neck?  What procedures will your doctor want you to have done for an accurate diagnosis?  Elaine Savard, diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer in 1997, had a cyst found on her thyroid gland during an annual physical examination.  On her website http://www.papillarythyroidcancerguide.com/guides/ she has made available a guide explaining the procedures that your doctor may order if a suspicious lump is found on your neck.
The guide "5 Steps Once A Lump Is Found On The Neck" will provide the following:
-The 7 Tests that you may have to go through
-What type of doctors you may be referred to by your family physician
-How to prepare yourself for treatment
-Where to go to get more information about thyroid cancer

“Neck Check Awareness” is important in the early diagnosis of thyroid cancer.  A guide for a self examination is also available on Savard’s website.
