-- North Carolina Missions of Mercy (NCMOM), sponsored by the NC Dental Society, held the largest free dental clinic in North Carolina in the Charlotte Convention Center, August 19, 6 AM to August 20, 6pm for 36 straight hours. Organizers assessed that 2,145 North Carolinian underserved patients received $1,069,768.00 donated services of dental care.
The NCMOM- Charlotte project aimed to give dental services to the uninsured deserving community of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, NC. Adults with income less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level Guidelines for the 48 contiguous states and DC were the target patients of this project. The North Carolina Dental Society provided the mobile clinic equipment and the professional NCMOM support staff during the 36-hour service.
Professional and community volunteers counting to 1,300 delivered dental services to the 2,145 patients. Volunteer dentists participated from practices in Charlotte, NC and also surrounding areas. Each dentist or staff took a five hour shift- scheduled around the clock- to provide 36 hours of dental care to the community.
Volunteer licensed dentists evaluated the most critical dental care needed by each patient. With this examination, patients received their main dental treatment required. Patients had either restorations, extractions, preventive and periodontal services, partial dentures, endodontics or minor adjustment of oral appliances.
Ballantyne Center for Dentistry staff and dentists Dr. Christian Yaste and Dr. Joe Hufanda found their shifts to be fun and inspiring. "We helped a lot of people and felt like it really made a difference to the Charlotte community," said Dr. Yaste.
NCMOM provides mobile cost free dental treatment to in need North Carolinians. For two years now, the organization has helped over 12,000 North Carolinians with more than $5,500,000 cost of dental services. Volunteers throughout the state hand in hand materialize the dental services as the NC Dental Health Fund and specific corporate sponsors assist in the finance.
