Sept. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers is excited to be the first practice in Michigan to be able to offer a new customized laser for treating low to moderate astigmatism in cataract surgery.

The femtosecond laser is the first to receive FDA clearance for use inside the eye, The Alcon LenSx® laser is helping define the future of laser cataract surgery. “This laser is the next revolutionary step in cataract surgery with the ability to expand on the current lifestyle lens options in correcting astigmatism providing patients with computer controlled precision (up to 10x more precise for some parts) as it automates some of the most challenging steps of refractive cataract surgery” says Paul Ernest, M.D. cataract and refractive surgeon for TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers. The laser replaces the traditional hand-held blade to optimize all incisions for enhanced, reproducible surgical performance. This breakthrough technology provides the surgeon with real-time three dimensional visualization for true customization of a lens replacement procedure.  The surgeon is able to view the eye's 3-D anatomy, and program and perform a comprehensive, computer-controlled surgical procedure. Anterior capsulotomy, corneal incisions, and lens fragmentation can be accomplished in a single step, before the surgeon even opens the eye in the operating room. “Patients for the longest time thought we used a laser for cataract surgery, which up to now was not true” says Kevin Lavery, cataract and refractive surgeon for TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers. “To be able to offer laser assisted cataract surgery here in Jackson County is very exciting for all of us”.

“At TLC our nationally known surgeons pride themselves in staying on top of the newest technology so we can offer the best treatment options to our patients” says Sue DeMott Executive Vice President at TLC Eyecare & Laser Centers.  “It’s especially exciting to be the first in Michigan to have this technology”.
