Marine Super Diesel Bug Warning by Marine Rescue Service

Sept. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Specialist diesel fuel polishing and marine diesel bug testing laboratory division of Thames Marine Rescue Service has issued a warning to all boat and ship operators regarding the Super Diesel Bug which has been identified as a member of the Sulphate Reducing Bacteria group or SRB for short.

The Super Diesel Bug has been found in bilges, water tanks, ballast tanks and fuel tanks. The bug is extremely virulent and reproduces at amazing speed in sulphurised fuel, as they feed on the sulphate, sulphite, and sulphanate, they produce hydrogen sulphide gas as an end product.

Hydrogen Sulphide Gas smells similar to rotten eggs, is a skin irritant and is more toxic than hydrogen cyanide and can be lethal.

Thames Marine Rescue Service have further identified that this group of Super Diesel Bug causes rapid pitting of metal fuel tanks and steel hulls, which if not identified early, can cause fuel leaks, major engine failure or compromise a vessel’s hull.
