Mums question, how can I have it all?
With the launch of the new Sarah Jessica Parker film, ‘I don’t know how she does it’, mums across the UK are wondering, how can we have it all? In the film, it unravels that the main character appears to have the dream life of work and domestic bliss, but she is really a duck treading water, missing out on key moments of her children’s lives as a working mum. The tale brings up the age old question; can mums still have it all? Is there ever a guilt free, happy balance?
One working mum who feels like she does have it all is Amanda Ashworth. Amanda has just launched the specialist recruitment company Excelsior Recruitment Partnership. As a single mum of one, Amanda has worked hard to get to where she is, but it hasn’t come without heartache.
Amanda’s marriage broke down when she was 8 months pregnant and she has been the sole bread winner ever since. After taking the first year off with her son Louis to enjoy her baby boy, Amanda felt the financial pressure to go back to work part time as a recruitment consultant. Then came the working tax credit cuts and rise in child care costs, Amanda knew that, to give her son everything she wanted him to have, she would have to go back to work full time.
Discussing her return to full time employment Amanda said ‘picking up and dropping off from nursery always involved tears and guilt, and then the guilt would return when I was the first to leave the office at 5pm, I just felt like I couldn’t win.’
Amanda then decided, along with two other experienced consultants, to go it alone and they set up Excelsior Recruitment Partnership, a brave move for a single parent in these economic times. Excelsior Recruitment Partnership is a specialist recruitment agency offering positions in Marketing, PR, Sales, HR and Senior Appointments and they have just launched their new website www.excelsiorpartnership.co.uk.
When creating the company Amanda wanted to give back to other mums in similar positions and decided that Excelsior Recruitment  Partnership would work to support mums seeking employment by offering free CV reviews and careers advice tailored to their needs.
Now Amanda has the flexibility she craved to spend more time with Louis, ‘if a meeting ends early, I can pick him up earlier’ Amanda says. This coupled with the achievement and satisfaction of running her own company really makes Amanda feel like she has the perfect balance.
And what would Amanda say to other single mums thinking of starting their own business? ‘Believe in yourself, research your idea and go for it. It is stressful but worth it. I can control the money I earn and work the hours to fit in with Louis.’
