9-11 Anniversary Inspires Carving of 13-Acre Corn Maze in Maryland
On the 10th anniversary of 9-11, a Maryland farm carves a corn maze to memorialize the event yet honor living American heroes -- U.S. military and first responders. Summers Farm Adventure's corn labyrinth captures the quintessential American spirit.
The farm's annual six-week farm-fresh festival, opening to its 15th season on September 24, 2011, will celebrate everyday American heroes but embrace the memory of Americans lost that fateful day in September 2001.
Teresa Summers Greenwood, festival manager with husband Jeff, felt this year should be the year to reflect and remember 9-11. “Our focus is essentially the true American spirit found in those who sacrifice daily on our behalf and those who have sacrificed their lives. This year’s maze and festival show our gratitude to America’s armed service personnel and first responders including police, fire, and emergency medical technicians.”
The 13-acre specially-themed cornfield is what draws big crowds to the Frederick-based farm. Winding pathways with challenging twists and turns depict the spirit of everyday American heroes with a message and embedded symbols cut into tall golden corn stalks. The message? Home of the Free Because of the Brave.
To highlight the theme, several planned special events include this year’s Heroes Weekend held October 8-9, 2011. The event will honor all military and first responders with special ticket pricing.
Summers Farm Adventure, operating on a 100-acre working farm in Frederick, Maryland, opens each fall for six weeks with a successful fall festival. It’s a time to ride old-fashioned hayrides or slide down giant mountain slides; grab a donut or bakery item; pick pumpkins from the fields, or get a little exercise (and a little laughter) in the maze or on the gigantic jumping pillow. Expect squeals from those rooting for their favorite piglet in daily swine races or from the fun of hand-feeding goats in the barnyard.
Summers Farm Adventure runs through October 31 from 10am-7pm on weekends and 1-7pm weekdays. Extend the fun after dark with campfires and the moonlight maze starting September 28.
