Tips for Schools and Parents Post Flooding

Thank you to school leaders who are delaying the start of school until facilities are assessed, dried out, and damaged materials replaced, and thank you to all schools that are serving as community centers, pre and post disasters.

Sept. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Healthy Schools Network re-released its Tips for Schools amid new flood warnings, and in light of continuing rain, wind, and storms along the east coast. Said founder Claire Barnett, "Smart school officials will delay the opening of schools until the facilities are fully assessed, dried out, and all water damaged materials have been replaced."

Children breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults and cannot identify threats or remove themselves from harm's way. Parents need to be aware of their environmental vulnerabilities, including to damp or mold-infested buildings, and take care that their own homes are assessed for water damage.

Healthy Schools Network TIPS for schools:
•   If the school building is flooded, standing in water, or still wet inside, it is NOT ready for occupancy.
•   To prevent mold, identify and replace all materials that are water logged or still damp after 24-48 hours.
•   Best website for mold identification and remediation is US EPA. http://www.epa.gov/mold/ and for schools http://www.epa.gov/mold/mold_remediation.html.
•   See child health and flood guidance from Am. Academy of Pediatrics/Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units at http://www.healthyschools.org/PEHSU_AAP_Recommendations_Floods.pdf
