Sept. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- The Miami Foundation is accepting applications for the inaugural class of Engaged Youth, a leadership development program geared toward high school juniors and seniors in Miami-Dade County.

“Investing and creating a pipeline of leadership for Greater Miami is central to our community’s success,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “For our community to thrive in the future we must instill a sense of pride and civic responsibility in the next generation and that means creating a cohort and culture of civically engaged youth today.”

Engaged Youth will directly connect 75 students from diverse backgrounds with mentors and role models who also share a commitment to building a Greater Miami.

The Engaged Youth program will run from October 2011 to May 2012, providing unique and exciting opportunities to explore Greater Miami’s history and development, its diverse neighborhoods, and social, economic and political issues. The program consists of three one-day sessions based on current events and Engaged Youth’s areas of interest that will take them out into the community. Students will develop leadership skills through team and individual community service projects.
Through the application process, The Miami Foundation is seeking a mixture of students with different life experiences, including those already engaged in the community and those who would like to be engaged in the community.
Participants will be eligible for community service credits. There is no cost to participate in the program.

Complete applications must be received by 4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26, 2011.  Selections will be announced Oct. 3, 2011.
