By: UroMed/Lisa Wells From July 15 to August 15, the S’NS and LASCI Facebook groups shared links to featured accessible programs, places, and events, spotlighting one state per day. Participants posted photos of related family vacations and weekend outings on the Facebook pages or in a photo gallery on the S’NS website. The magazine received more than 100 photo submissions that were judged by a panel of professional photographers. SPORTS ‘N SPOKES and LASCI would like to congratulate the following photo contest winners: • 3rd Runner-Up: Danny Lilya for his photo of the Badlands National Park in South Dakota • 2nd Runner-Up: Spencer Fox for his water-skiing photo from this year’s Ability First Sports camp • 1st Place Winner: London resident Carl Brunning and his bungee jump photo, featured on the cover of the September 2011 SPORTS ‘N SPOKES magazine To see all of the pictures that LASCI and S’NS friends submitted while enjoying life this summer, please visit: http://gallery.pvamagazines.com/ “As a quadriplegic, I understand the role that personal independence combined with community support plays in achieving a full, successful life after spinal-cord injury,” LASCI founder Bert Burns says. “The best part of this program is that we are encouraging SCI survivors to get out and enjoy life while giving them a list of ways they can do so more easily. Having a place to start makes all the difference when moving beyond a life-changing injury.” More than 3300 friends, family members and caregivers have joined LASCI’s peer support group on Facebook this summer as part of the initiative. LASCI is sponsored by UroMed - http://www.uromed.com - one of the largest urology and continence care supply companies in the nation. About Life After Spinal Cord Injury Bert Burns became quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident during his youth. His desire to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities led him to create a free motivational program for peer support and rehabilitation groups called Life After Spinal Cord Injury. In 2010, the free, nonprofit program helped more than 600 medical professionals, patients, former patients, and family members with information, advice, and encouragement. LASCI expects to more than double that number in 2011.
