New Horizons of Southern California Gears Up for Changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill

New Horizons of SoCal expects increased traffic in its learning centers as changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill take effect October 1, 2011. The new law allows veterans to attend vocational schools in addition to universities.

Aug. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- New Horizons of Southern California (NHSoCal) announced last month that it would begin accepting applications for students matriculating into its programs this fall. The school anticipates an increase in enrollments by the beneficiaries of last December's Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvements Act. The new law, which takes affect October 1, brings added benefits to qualifying military veterans and their spouses.

The "New GI Bill," an extension of the original postwar bill of the 1940s, was renewed in 2008 to include individuals serving since September 11, 2001. The 2008 version, which offered up to 100% funding for a four-year undergraduate education at public universities, will undergo several changes in October. In addition to provisions that increase the number of eligible National Guard members and their spouses, for example, the new law allows beneficiaries to apply their funding to vocational and trade schools in addition to universities.

With this change, New Horizons will likely be an appealing option for veterans who choose not to invest time in a four-year degree. The school's comparatively brief programs and its focus on the high-growth area of Information Technology will undoubtedly attract those who wish to enter the workforce as quickly as possible. Indeed, the school's accelerated programs will allow qualifying students to enter the job market in 1-2 years, leaving them free to dedicate their remaining funding to spouses or children.

Another of NHSoCal's attractions is its free Job Placement Services, which help pair newly-trained graduates with businesses needing to fill job openings. The school has been a popular resource among employers hoping to take advantage of Federal programs that incentivize hiring veterans. More companies participating in the school's Placement Services means better job opportunities for the students themselves.
