Sept. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Philadelphia, PA – Bookbinder Specialties, a PA Preferred Company, continues to build on its gourmet line of seafood soups by reintroducing Pepper Pot soup, a historical Philadelphia flavor.

The original Pepper Pot recipe was allegedly developed by the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.  According to some sources, the Continental Army was running low on food and survived the winter on a spicy stew made of tripe and vegetables.  Bookbinder’s Pepper Pot is a seafood version, made with premium cod instead of the original tripe.  It is a hearty, thick, spicy, tomato based stew, with carrots, onions and macaroni.  The soup is semi-condensed and packaged in a 10.5 oz. can.

A pepper pot is the symbol of an annual award by the Philadelphia chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, recognizing Philadelphia’s top PR professionals. The Pepperpot Awards were named in 1968 by Bill Parker, who was the chapter president and head of Campbell Soup communications. Parker felt the name implied excitement, liveliness, and good-humored intrigue, saying, “Like Philly’s famous soup, we put everything we have into all of our public relations campaigns.”

“Our Pepper Pot soup was discontinued several years ago, but it is now back by popular demand”, explained Sean O’Neil, Bookbinder’s president, “We were inundated with calls, e-mails, and letters after the recent discontinuation of Campbell’s version.  We reformulated our Pepper Pot to reduce the sodium level, in line with today’s consumer’s expectations, while maintaining our gourmet taste and heritage”.

Bookbinder’s soups have been a staple in the Philadelphia area, and served in the Old Original Bookbinder’s Restaurant since 1865. The restaurant created a foods division in the early 1970s to share the original restaurant favorites as packaged foods sold throughout the United States. Today, Bookbinders Specialties carries on the tradition of the restaurant while catering to the  nation’s gourmet consumers.

The soup will be initially launched in the Philadelphia region at Acme Markets, and other fine grocery and specialty stores.  It will also be available for purchase on the Bookbinder Specialty web site, www.BookbinderSpecialties.com, at the progressive on-line grocer, www.Alice.com, and at www.Amazon.com.
