Aug. 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Ayrshire, Scotland--Ayrshire printing company Kestrel Press has just completed and passed stage 1 of gaining ISO14001 environmental accreditation. The company aims to complete its full accreditation in November. Once complete Kestrel Press will have an integrated management system incorporating ISO9001 and ISO14001.

Kestrel Press account manager Graeme Ferguson said: “This is a strategic move for our business to open new markets, as well as being aware of our responsibility to the environment. We have had an environmental policy for many years, but not an official one like this.

“The results have been fairly immediate, as our amount of waste going to landfill is looking like being cut by 50% in the first few weeks!”

ISO 14001 is voluntary with its main aim to assist companies in continually improving their environmental performance, whilst complying with any applicable legislation.

Companies are responsible for setting their own targets and performance measures, with the standard serving to assist them in meeting objectives and the subsequent monitoring and measurement of these objectives.

The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations

(a) minimize how their processes negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land);

(b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements,

(c) continually improve in the above.

ISO 14000 is similar to ISO 9000 quality management in that both pertain to the process of how a product is produced, rather than to the product itself. As with ISO 9000, certification is performed by third-party organizations (BSI, Lloyds etc.) rather than being awarded by ISO directly. The ISO audit standard applies when auditing for both 9000 and 14000 compliance at once.

The standard is not an environmental management system as such and therefore does not dictate absolute environmental performance requirements, but serves instead as a framework to assist organisations in developing their own environmental management system. ISO 14001 can be integrated with other management functions and assists companies in meeting their environmental and economic goals.

Kestrel Press managing director Colin McCallum commented: “As one individual company, our environmental impact is fairly small. But if every business were to adopt a pro-active environmentally friendly policy, then together we could make a substantial contribution to the future well-being of the planet.”

Kestrel Press has been established for 38 years, and account manager Graeme Ferguson is the third generation to enter the family owned and run business.

Graeme Ferguson concluded: “Due to difficult market conditions Kestrel Press has evolved into more than a printing company, and we now see ourselves as a business partner to our clients. Our service and quality are excellent, and we always ensure that we offer value for money.

“We have a long and successful track record of delivering high quality print to a wide range of companies throughout the UK.”
