Aug. 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Join Hometown History Tours as we follow the twists and turns of the Huron and Detroit Rivers and uncover the significance these important waterways played in the development of the region south of Detroit known as "Downriver".

Visit http://hometownhistorytours.com to book your tour.

Our narrated tours recount the region's exciting social, cultural, military and industrial history and point out Native American landmarks, remnants of the Old Hull corduroy road - one of Michigan's first roads dating back to the War of 1812, historic homes and buildings, Henry Ford's former headlight assembly plant, and so much more!

Rich in natural resources, this region became a hotbed for industries producing steel, ships, chemicals, power. In fact, the first factory in the U.S. to employ the Bessemer method which revolutionized steel production, was located Downriver.

Tourgoers will see how smokestacks of the 19th and 20th centuries have given way to greenways featuring miles of hiking and biking trails, wetlands, waterfowl nesting colonies and one of the best spots in eastern North America to see the autumn migration of over two dozen species of raptors such as eagles, kites, falcons, owls and vultures.

Downriver is the hometown of  many well-known people in business, film and sports including the late Heinz Prechter, who not only reintroduced the concept of sunroofs on automobiles during the 1970s but was also a key figure behind the presidential run of former President George W. Bush.

Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery, the final resting place of Prechter and another auto icon, Preston Tucker, is one stop on the tour.  The beautiful grounds feature gorgeous displays of art and sculpture including the Conrad Pickel mosaics in the Shrine of Remembrance dedicated to 9/11 responders and those who died during in this national tragedy.

Other stops include: Memory Lane in Flat Rock,  Pointe Mouillee State Game Preserve (one of the largest fresh water marsh restoration projects in the world), Gibraltar Bay Alpaca Farm, Lake Erie Metro Park, Grosse Ile Naval Air Museum and more!
