"The Last Picture Show" features the work of all 27 members.
By: ArtPlace Gallery “The Last Picture Show” will be ArtPlace’s last show at their current exhibition space, but the artist/members of the co-operative gallery expect to be together and showing art well into their 30th year in 2012 and beyond. Reaching out to the community with lectures, movies, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops will continue to be part of the Gallery’s mission. “Our members are putting forth examples of their newest and best work as a culmination of two exciting years of shows at 11 Unquowa Road,” declares co-president Margot Bittenbender. “Visitors can view and purchase works of art that range from the delicate watercolors and mixed media work of Fairfield artist Elisa Khachian, to the boldly colored abstract paintings and mono prints of Mary Louise Long from Stamford and the geometric collages of Westport’s Joan Miller.” In describing her monotype work, "Orange Vessels 1,2,” Fairfield-based Diane Pollock says, “The archetypal use of the vessel to symbolize women's fertility carries powerful meaning. The dissecting and multiplicity of the abstracted female forms in my monotypes suggests many generations of knowledge and life experience.” Carol Cole, also of Fairfield, is a former jewelry illustrator who notes that, ”For a number of years I have been working on a series called ‘Home and Family’ - the house being home and the chair representing family. The work for this exhibit is on paper and was first printed in a yellow color. The second layer was in green, which brought out the yellow shapes.” Elisa Khachian’s exhibit is an untitled pencil drawing of which she says, ”This work is about what is happening with the gallery now, in drawing of stacks and stacks of cups and saucers shaking up and bumping into each other and not knowing…what is ahead for this wonderful group of extraordinary artist friends. I have been a member for 28 years.” “ArtPlace decided to leave their beautiful space in Fairfield to look for a site better suited to our members' needs,“ explains co-president, Binnie Birstein. “We are eagerly looking for a new space where we can continue the artists' co-operative begun almost 30 years ago.” The upcoming exhibit will feature works by Fairfield artist Susan Newbold, Westport artists Toby Michaels and Mary Elizabeth Peterson, Darien artists Karen Vogel and Cate Leach, New Haven’s Barbara Harder, Patrick Kennedy and Gerald Saladyga, Megan Collins from Norwalk, Phyllis Peckar Clamage from Stamford, Weston’s Barbara Bernstein and Binnie Birstein, Cecilia Moy Fradet and Suzanne Keany, Margot Bittenbender from Old Greenwich, Sandra Meagher from Rowayton, Dave Pressler of Shelton, Liana Moonie and Martha Reinken from Greenwich, Wendy Shalen and Tina Rohrer from Pound Ridge, NY and one of the gallery’s original founding members Florence Zolan from Bridgeport.
