Aug. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- To ease the transition from summer fun to back to school schedules while raising awareness about the risk associated with unhealthy lifestyles, hometown girl Dr. Velonda Thompson is traveling from Detroit, Michigan to team up with D.C. Councilman Jim Graham, Chartered Health Plan, Capital Meat Company, SHIRE, Inc, Cardinal Bank, Bread for the City, DC Office of Aging and others to support Agape Faith Ministries’10th Annual Back to School Community Festival.
This year’s host is the Fairmont Apartments in NW, Washington D. C. The festival will be held Saturday, September 3, 2011 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Attendees will enjoy free food, fun and games including a hula-hoop contest and jump rope contest. Free blood pressure, glucose and BMI assessments will be provided as well as free school supplies, health promotion giveaways, Allen’s Food sponsored food basket giveaways and other prizes.
The Wellness Café will offer smoothie tastings as well as sampling of tasty healthy baked goods. In addition to mini massages, a number of mini holistic health presentations will be provided with opportunities to ask several nutrition and health promotion experts coaching questions. The message of obesity prevention through movement will be reinforced with the group hustle dance, led by Dr. Velonda and yoga led by Detroit, Michigan Yoga expert Claudette Bond, RYT. The importance of healthy lifestyle choices cannot be overstated, particularly for young minds working to do well academically. “Each year the incidence of diseases associated with poor nutrition and lack of physical activity continues to climb, increasingly including younger members of our population” said Velonda Thompson PhD, Wellness Cafe and Kidz Zone coordinator and President of Be-Fit, Inc.
