Aug. 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Chicago, IL – Construction IQ, a division of IQPC, announces the 3rd Bridges: Design, Inspection & Retrofitting Summit, to be held October 24 to 26, 2011 in Chicago, IL.  This unique summit addresses key areas of focus for engineers in modern bridge construction and retrofitting:

•   Improving long term performance and efficacy of structures
•   Producing innovative, security conscious bridges
•   Implementing sustainable design techniques

Construction IQ has assembled a world class speaking faculty to  discuss best practices in the design, construction and retrofit of bridges utilizing case studies and interactive panel discussions.

The national transportation grid in the United States has reached a critical state.  This is due in no small part to the degraded state of our aging network of bridges and the ever-increasing traffic volumes. Each state is responsible for maintaining and, if necessary, retrofitting bridges to ensure a reliable and safe transportation system. Furthermore, security risks are ever-increasing and mitigating these risks is of great importance.  Commenting on potential risks, Chris Gagnon, Senior Vice President of Transportation at Ammann & Whitney, stated, “threats on structures will be based on various types of scenarios – they could be vehicular born, they could potentially just be people, individuals… they could be threats from marine vehicles, or a boat towards the piers.”  He speaks further about methods being used in bridge construction to mitigate these types of security risks and manage future requirements in this interview:

Topics addressed at the Summit include:

•   Increasing understanding of the development and utilization of P3 projects
•   Integrating bridge inspection into long-term sustainability plans
•   Developing innovative design techniques tailored to match project needs
•   Gaining knowledge of time and budget best practices for construction and retrofitting methods
•   Accounting for greater loading, traffic management and the effect they have on structures

The Summit offers those in the industry an opportunity to network with chief engineers from government transportation departments, general contractors and consulting engineering firms, and includes speakers from Ammann & Whitney, HDR, AECOM, FIGG Bridge, Koch Skanska, and more.
