ISECA calls upon the Algarve Community to join forces to do more to combat crime

In an exclusive feature in the Algarve Resident, the Algarve Communities English-Language Newspaper, David Thomas Director of ISECA, raised for debate the issue what more can be done to prevent crime in the region.

Aug. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- The article explains the needs for both the community, private security, police and civil government to interact closely to prevent crime.

In the Algarve, there are several factors that influence crime including the availability of drugs, a sizeable foreign population and a large number of overseas tourists. Crime in the Algarve is mainly targetted against properties, whereas in the north of the country it is more against persons.

As in many countries, where there is a thriving tourist industry, some tourists become victims of crime, simply because they are considered by criminals (often incorrectly) as compartively wealthy, unlikely to report it to police unless passports are stolen, and will not be around to give evidence. The article highlights the fact that criminals prey on the lack of security awareness by some tourists.

The article also covers the intiative of some civic minded residents and through engagement with the GNR which led to the forming of the Safe Residents Program operating in a number of villages in the Algarve

Portugal still has one of the lowest crime levels in Europe and is therefore a compartively safe place to live and visit. More details are available from the News page at ISECA's website http://www.iseca.net  or   http://www.algarveresident.com/42348-0/algarve/are-we-doi...
