Aug. 16, 2011 - PRLog -- Pune: The CT scanner was first used in the city in 1982 by renowned Dr. Avinash Kelkar, Sr. Radiologist who has been reporting CT scans since its inception. Dr. Avinash Kelkar, Mr. Gajanan Mudliar and Mr Arun Roy have been instrumental in setting CT scans in the city now walk down the last 30 years, observe and share how the CT scan has developed and evolved over the past 30 years.
The CT scan has been evolved in three primary ways:
a) Scan time (Speed).
b) Area covered, and increased application.
c) Awareness of the modality.
The CT scan was first installed in the city in 1982 at the Pune Medical Centre in Ruby Hall. This scanner was limited only to head scanning and the entire procedure would take almost an hour. This was the only CT scanner available in the city back then. “However, it was a great boom for the patients with head injuries or a stroke”, says Dr.A.V Kelkar.
Subsequently the company installed a whole body CT scanner in the year 1985. Dr. Avinash Kelkar undertook a rigorous training in Japan to learn how to interpret the reports on the CT machine whose application increased leaps and bounds, since the whole body, from the chest, lung, abdomen, pelvis, joints to the head and neck could be scanned.
This was progressively followed by the spiral CT scan. The most important mile stone in the evolution of CT scan, due to its high speed and increased X-ray tube capacity the scanned data could be obtained in volumes.
“This advancement completely changed the perception to a CT scan, and its applications further extended to visualization of blood vessels”, says Dr. Kelkar who has to his credit successfully reported almost 1.5 lakh scans till date.
Dr. Avinash Kelkar was also instrumental in bringing the first 128 slice CT scanner in Pune under the banner of Poona Diagnostic Services in the year 2010.
This machine has been a great success in terms of finding solutions to difficult clinical conditions. For instance: if a patient has an acute chest pain, the cause of the pain can be diagnosed within 10 seconds and an immediate treatment can begin.
One of the most important USP of this machine is that it is the only machine that has a non-invasive, cardiac scan which takes place in a matter of five heartbeats i.e. within two seconds the entire heart can be covered which is about 12cms in size.
The Multi-slice CT scanner is also used in Oncology and helps in detection of the exact location of cancer and to the extent it has spread within seconds. Besides cancer detection the machine is also very effective if a paralysis is detected. The machine helps the doctor to diagnose the cause of paralysis and differentiate with the appropriate type of treatment to be given. Holistically the machine is extremely helpful to detect and diagnose any kind of ailment within seconds hence leaving no room for the patient to suffer due to delayed diagnosis.
In cases where patients are suffering from ENT problems the high resolution scan helps locate the problems in the fine ear structures. Furthermore the machine also acts an excellent tool for planning a dental implant.
Dr. Avinash Kelkar, Sr. Radiologist and has been reporting CT scans since inception in Pune concludes, “I have seen the CT scan evolve tremendously over time, evolve from hours to seconds. My journey in the last 30 years has seen the CT scan reaching to not only everyone in the city but also to the rural masses in our country much faster than expected which has been very satisfactory for me”.
