These aids include a wide range of products; from reachers and shoehorns to nutritional drinks and diabetic supplies. But as time progressed, we felt like we weren’t branching out quite as much as we would like. To change that, we decided to focus on a subject that is becoming an increasingly large problem in America and the world: incontinence.
   After doing a few months of research, the team at RestoredLiving.com has come to realize just how big of a problem incontinence has become, specifically urinary incontinence. According to multiple international surveys, an estimated 10-15% of all women and approximately 5% of men suffer from urinary incontinence. That’s over 500 million people worldwide!
   Along with our research on urinary incontinence, we have been looking for products that could become the best solutions to the problem.    The first thing we wanted to test was absorbency, so we added 1000mL (over 4 cups) of warm water to the middle of the diaper. What impressed us the most was how the diaper didn’t bulk up in one specific spot, even though it was retaining over 2000mL (over half of a gallon!) of warm water. Other high-end diapers, such as Prevail Pm adult briefs, tend to bulk up in voided areas, thus increasing the chances of a leak. And they aren’t nearly as absorbent as the Abena Abri-Form adult diapers.
After further research, we came to the conclusion that Abena Abri-Form diapers have a specific wood pulp/SAP (super absorbent polymer) ratio that allows them to be so functional. Wood pulp is the main component in diapers that wicks away fluid from a voided area, as well as absorbing liquid. SAP is a molecular polymer that absorbs an incredible amount of liquid before reaching maximum capacity, thus SAP is a huge factor in a diaper’s absorbency.
There are pros and cons for each, of course. Wood pulp is very good at wicking away fluid, and can hold a decent amount of liquid. But when it is squeezed or pushed on while retaining a maximum amount of liquid, it may leak out. SAP, on the other hand, is extremely absorbent; far more than wood pulp. But when SAP absorbs liquid, it turns into a gel. If there is too much liquid-saturated SAP in one area, a clump of gel may bulk up the diaper, increasing the chance leakage may occur.
When these two substances are used together in a diaper, great things happen. If the ratio between the amount of wood pulp and the amount of SAP is applied correctly, a diaper can effectively wick away fluid and absorb a maximum amount of liquid. This is where we come to Abena.
