Remote Control Air Show Expected to Draw Large Crowds

Is it real or is it remote control? Visitors to this air show will have to work hard to figure out which of these big birds are real and which are remote control.

Aug. 15, 2011 - PRLog -- The Warbirds & Classics Remote Control Air Show in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin is expected to be another record setter.  According to officials of the Fond du Lac Aeromodelers Club which hosts the four day event, the air show continues to attract more pilots and spectators every year.

The fifth annual remote control air show which begins at 9 am on Thursday, August 18, is expected to feature more than one hundred pilots flying over two hundred flying aircraft.

The small town club club is also preparing for a record number of spectators.  Its last air show attracted over 3,000 spectators.  This year the club is preparing for 4,000 to 5,000 spectators.  It has become one of the top late summer family events in Fond du Lac County.

Guest pilots are expected to attend the event from Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, and even Canada.  Some of the pilots arrive early.

The air show is helpful to the local economy.  The Fond du Lac Aeromodelers Club also hosts a smaller one day air show in June each year.

The show will feature warbirds and classic aircraft on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 18-20.  Sunday, August 21, is a "fun fly" featuring many types of remote control aircraft, including acrobatic planes in all shapes and sizes.

A tent called the “Canadian embassy” in fun will be constructed at the airfield to welcome and host Canadian pilots.

RC planes may be considered toys by some, but good luck trying to tell the toys from the real thing.  These big birds glisten, maneuver and roar just like their real counterparts and are fun for the whole family to watch.

“Most of our spectators seem to have a really good time" said George Becker, spokesperson for the club.

"It's hard to beat a good hot dog, lots of sunshine and a great show for only five dollars per car-full.  Everyone seems to enjoy it, from kids to grandparents.  Lots of our visitors come back over and over during the four day event and it's just a good time for everybody” said Becker.

According to Becker, the club continues to expand its list of food items available to spectators to accommodate visitors who visit the show several times during the four day event.

This year's show will host even more celebrity pilots than usual, including nationally-recognized celebrity RC pilot Mac Hodges and five crew members.  The six-man RC crew will fly Hodges' famous B29 aircraft and X1 rocket.  The B29 is a scale replica of the first long range heavy bomber made by Boeing, known as the B29 Superfortress.  The plane was first flown in 1942.

This "toy" replica is a monster with a wingspan of twenty feet and weigh ninety-eight pounds.  At the command of its master pilot using a little box and a couple of joy sticks, it flies with four engines and 16 batteries.

Another RC masterpiece, a remarkably real 94 pound Electra-L-188 with a wingspan of 160 inches will also fly at the event.

With wingspans over nineteen feet, some of these joy-stick-operated RC planes are actually larger than real aircraft, such as some acrobatic planes that have wingspans of approximately seventeen feet.

Other well-known national guest pilots and scale masters are expected to attend.

The air show will feature a wide variety of unique warbird aircraft from World War I to current.  Visitors can see biplane and triplane aircraft from the days of the Red Baron, to today’s modern, super fast F22 jet fighters.  The show will also feature RC aircraft depicting classic aircraft predating1960.

Some planes may drop harmless “dummy bombs” from the sky while others will amaze you with precise formation flying and smoke shows.  Still others will excite the whole family with flight speeds of up to two hundred miles per hour… whistling in the air just like the real thing.

The air show is a great family value.  Visitors can also attend the event as often as they want during the four days for just one modest admission fee.  For many families, the air show has become a family fun day tradition before going back to school.

The Warbirds & Classics Air Show in Fond du Lac will take place from 9 am – 4 pm each day on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 18, 19, 20 and 21, weather permitting.  Hot dogs, burgers, pizza, baked goods, ice cream and soft drinks will be available and admission is only $5 per vehicle, regardless of how many occupants are in the vehicle.   Visitors can attend the event as much as they want during the four days for one admission fee.

There will also be a raffle of RC planes and other prizes.  Limited seating is available but spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs if they’d like to sit.  Attending the event does not require a lot of walking.

The Air Show is located at Wellnitz Field, N4841 Hickory Road, two and one half miles south of Hwy 41 on Hickory Road in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
