Aug. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- With all the stress of going to work, going to school, managing your bills, handling your expenses, taking care of kids, pets, family members and friends, the last thing you need is to get sick. Here are some great and natural ways to boost your immune system.

Nutrition

A good diet is absolutely vital to a healthy immune system. What you put in to your body is all it has to rely on to fight the constant battle against illness, infections, and malnourishment. By eating processed or fast foods, you are not getting the nutrients that your body needs. Avoid the greasy nastiness of fast food and attempt to expand your palette. Lean more towards whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, and lean meats, including skinless chicken. These foods are high in antioxidants, which your body needs for a healthy immune system. When purchasing your veggies and fruits, try to include “the rainbow”. A wide variety of color provides all of the beneficial nutrients that you need.

Vitamins, Herbal Remedies, and Probiotics

There are tons of natural remedies that will help you boost your immune system, including:

Vitamin C – increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies.  It is also a potent antioxidant.
Vitamin E – is an antioxidant and immune booster. It stimulates the production of B-cells that produce antibodies to destroy bacteria.
A wonderful mutilvitamin is Daily Vita Plus.
Beta-Carotene – increases the number of infection-fighting cells, natural killer cells, and T-cells, as well as being a powerful antioxidant.
Zinc – increases the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and makes them more aggressive.
L-Arginine – is an amino acid that promotes wound healing and also supports the immune system.  Dairy, meat, poultry, and fish are all good sources.  Supplementation is important as levels drop during times of stress.
Probiotics – these are good bacteria that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria in the gut and promote those that aid digestion and promote a healthy immune response to infection. Some great probiotics are ThreeLac, FiveLac, and FloraFive.
Garlic – the primary active agent in garlic is allicin, and it is a well known antioxidant.  Garlic also helps to fight pathogens, making it excellent for combating infections and viruses

Things to Avoid

Stress

Stress severely compromises your immune system. Prolonged stretches of stress will not only impact your mental health, but lead to a dysfunctional immune system. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to find ways to combat stress. Find a hobby, learn to meditate, begin gardening, or yoga. Embrace an activity that will help you reduce your stress levels, even if it’s temporary.

Poor Sleep

Sleep is imperative for your overall health. Sleep not only rests, relaxes, and rejuvenates you, but it is also important to supporting the immune system.  During sleep, the immune system is replenished and strengthened.  Losing even one night of sleep can significantly suppress the immune system.
