j-Summit New York Combines Rock with Poetry in a Fundraising Collaboration
J-Summit New York, the monthly concert series that brings exciting local acts to the stage, continues this month with a singer-songwriter and four electrifying rock bands.
This month’s lineup will rock the house. Singer/guitarist Key Appleseeds will play his brand of blues/rock and set the tone for the four bands that are making their j-Summit New York debuts. Mama’s Dirty Li’l Secret is a sassy bunch from Brooklyn who describes their music as “the sonic love child born of the torrid love affair between Soul and Punk.” Hard rocking FiRESiGN features bass guitarist Masaki Yamada, the former lead singer of popular Japanese heavy metal bands EZO and Loudness. Neo Blues Maki, with kimono-clad lead singer Kayo Yoshioka, presents a contemporary blues twist to enka, the nostalgic ballad of Japan’s post-war years. Lastly, the heavy metal continues with Muteki, a trio powered by the lungs of vocalist/bassist, Mouda.
Moreover, this month’s j-Summit New York invited a reading group to support Japan together in a unique way with Untitled NY’s poetry reading related to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan. Based on a work by Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, the reading, called “Recital without a Title” in Japan, features the voices of Japan after the horrific disaster. It was originally performed in Tokyo on April 30 and again in New York City on June 29. Director Sonoko Kawahara and local actors will recreate the reading for this special j-Summit New York event.
Reservations are required for the reading (send an e-mail to untitlednyreservation@
