Aug. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- In an effort to help reduce the 700,000+ patent application backlog at the USPTO, Orlando Author & Inventor John D. Smith has found a solution. Smith, author of the new “DON’T File a Patent!” book (232 page paperback, $24.95) says, “The U.S. Patent Office loves the concept of obviousness. An obvious way to reduce the patent application backlog and to help patent reform is for inventors to stop filing patents on their inventions. My DON’T File a Patent! book is the first and only one that encourages inventors not to waste their money on patents or patent protection. This will save inventors thousands of dollars and will help the USPTO reduce the patent application backlog, as well as help patent reform!”

In his book, Smith uses his own experiences in spending almost $25,000 on a patent application for his multi-million selling Storm Stoppers Hurricane Window Protection invention to describe 10 reasons why not to file a patent on an invention. Chapters include “Patent Attorneys are like Pac Man,” (Chapter 11), “YOUGOTTAWANNA,” (Chapter 8) and the lengthy Chapter 1, which describes 10 reasons why NOT to file a patent, and explains how patents are worthless for most inventors.

DON’T File a Patent! details many ways to protect an invention without a patent and describes dozens of money saving tips for entrepreneurs and inventors. The foreword was written by Patent Attorney Patrick Anderson of Patent Calls, an Austin, Texas firm that provides patent analysis and litigation support for patent attorneys. “Every Patent Attorney should read this book,” writes Mr. Anderson.

DON’T File a Patent! is available in paperback for $24.95 at http://www.amazon.com as well as in paperback and PDF E-book format on Smith’s website, http://www.dontfileapatent.com.
