Aug. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Scott McCorkle knows how exciting and stressful sending a child off to college can be. He and his dealerships, Liberty Buick GMC of Charlotte and Liberty Buick GMC of Matthews, have been helping parents in North and South Carolina find safe and reliable cars and trucks for their college-bound teens for almost thirty years. Read on for his advice on how to make heading to school with a car a great experience for everyone!

So, your teen is heading off to school. You’ve double checked to make sure all of the “necessities” of college life are packed (from lap-top to wardrobe, he’s all set). You’ve gone over your expectations as far as behavior and grades are concerned (have fun, stay safe, remain on the right side of the law and maintain a stellar grade point average; she understands). They’re ready to go.

But what about the car? Are they prepared for the challenges that come with driving in and around a college campus? From unfamiliar surroundings and new destinations, to restricted parking and contending with lots of pedestrians, there are many. Scott McCorkle, of Liberty Buick GMC http://www.clickliberty.com offers these tips to make sure both you and your student are truly prepared for their first semester away:

Do a Thorough Car Check
•   Check to ensure the oil, coolant, windshield cleaner, power-breaking and steering fluids are topped off, and make sure your teen knows how monitor and refill them if necessary.
•   Check the tire pressure and teach your teen how to use a tire pressure gauge.
•   Teach your child how to safely change a tire. This is important!

Create an Emergency Kit
•   This should include a first aid kit, blanket, flairs, flashlight, batteries, and a set of jumper cables.
•   Place pen, paper, emergency contact numbers and proof of insurance in the glove box.

Take a Tour Around Town
•   Have your student take a drive around the college and town to locate places he’ll most likely visit. Find the supermarket, gas station, and popular hangouts so he knows his way around.

Become Familiar with Parking Regulations
•   At most colleges, parking spaces are at a premium (and tickets seem to be issued freely). Be sure to purchase any needed parking tags and seek out appropriate parking spots for  her classes, dorms, and the student center. Encourage the use of the school’s shuttle service, as well!

Watch Out for Pedestrians
•   Pedestrians are everywhere on campus (and often not paying attention)!  Make sure your teen knows the rules about yielding to pedestrians and is aware of all the crosswalks around campus.

Inform your Insurance Carrier
•   The fact that your child has a car at school may or may not affect your rates, but it’s important to be upfront with your agent so that he can be the most help if need arises.
