Aug. 8, 2011 - PRLog -- Two of the truck drivers were taken to a local hospital and said to have only minor injuries.  The chain-reaction crash happened about 200 miles east of La Crosse in Oak Creek according to reports.  Initial reports indicated that one of the truckers failed to slow for traffic that was at a standstill due to highway construction.  Preliminary investigations show that the minivan driven by the Illinois man killed in the crash was crushed between two tractor-trailer rigs when the accident occurred.

Following the accident I-94 was closed to traffic while investigations were performed by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department.  All lanes reopened for traffic by 6 a.m.

While it wasn't known initially why the driver failed to stop for the construction, it raises suspicions about whether the driver may have been fatigued.  This is a horrible tragedy that happens all too often on today's highways and interstates.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration big trucks are involved in approximately 12% of all fatal traffic accidents.  When accidents with tractor-trailer rigs do occur, drivers of the trucks account for only 14% of those who suffer fatal injuries - the rest are motorists driving cars.  This demonstrates how regular drivers have little protection when involved in an accident with a big rig.

We may never know what caused this accident, whether the driver was simply fatigued, was under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances, or whether it may have been defective or faulty equipment (such as a failure of the brakes).  Unfortunately, one more life was lost in a big rig accident.
