Aug. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Sciatica can be described as pain that stems from the lower spine. If you are suffering from sciatica, you will most likely  experience sharp and painful sensations towards the knee, ankle and even the feet. You may also feel a burning or numbness on those areas mentioned. Although sciatic pain is most usual in particular individuals such as pregnant women, the obese and the elderly, it can easily be mistaken for just plain lower back muscle problems.  Sciatica is not an illness in itself, but rather a symptom for an abnormality occurring along the sciatic nerve. Once these nerves are compressed, it can result in inflammation.  In other cases a herniated disc at the back of the spine or what is called a lumbar spine disorder can trigger sciatica, as well as piriformis syndrome and spinal stenosis. Sciatica can impede us in our everyday tasks. It decreases human productivity, whether at work or at home.

Treatment using yoga for sciatica pain is a debated topic. Some experts believe that yoga can give  much needed relief for this condition. There have been a lot of testimonies from sciatica patients, especially the elderly that yoga effectively eases the temporary and acute pain they have been living with. Stress and back tensions are among the conditions that cause sciatica. Among others, these are the conditions that yoga can address.

Getting yourself into a yoga program accompanied with specific exercises is one of the most efficient ways of preventing sciatica pain. Some of the most common yoga exercises integrated into the sciatic program are reclined & supported back bends, twists and forward bends. Yoga may not work for every patient. There are some sciatic pains that are severe enough that it can stop the person from doing the postures. In this case, you may need to seek other types of treatment. Keep in mind that other treatments for sciatica are readily available, including the traditional medical approach. There are also others that offer a less conventional cure which involves physical therapy.
Whether yoga can be the sole answer to completely eliminating sciatic pain is arguable. What is more acceptable in the medical field today is that a program of yoga is worth a shot in preventing the recurrence of sciatica.  Yoga exercises are usually accompanied by other sets of exercises that focus on stretching the afflicted areas.

As always, getting an initial consultation from a qualified physician is the smart way to go to find out the cause of your sciatic pain as well as creating a treatment program for it. You may also seek the help of a yoga instructor with regards to creation and execution of the treatment program. You have the responsibility to be active and knowledgeable as you follow a certain treatment process. Once the cause is identified, it is easier for a yoga instructor to recommend yoga postures for sciatic pain relief.  If yoga works for you, then it may reduce your need to take medications for pain relief.
