Aug. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan Chevrolet dealers welcome the news that they will be receiving another fuel-efficient vehicle to offer their customers, starting in 2013. There are hybrids such as General Motors’ Chevy Volt or mild-hybrids such as the Buick LaCrosse with eAssist, and diesel engines are an option that is steadily growing in the U.S. for higher fuel efficiency.
Currently, the diesel Chevrolet Cruze is already available in Europe and other countries and will finally be available for the U.S. market. The reason it took so long for the decision to bring the diesel to the U.S. market was because automakers such as General Motors believed that there would be no demand for such a vehicle, especially when diesel engines cost more than non-diesel.
Diesel engines get on average 20 to 40 percent better fuel mileage than other gasoline engines of the same size. It is true that the cost of diesel fuel is between five and 10 percent higher than regular gasoline, but diesel engines get better fuel economy because they do not burn as much fuel as gas engines to get the same amount of power.
Other benefits of diesel engines include:
•   no ignition system so there is no need for a tune up
•   exhaust systems last longer as diesel fuel exhaust is not as corrosive as gas exhaust
•   diesel engines may last between 400,000 and 600,000 miles
The more popular diesel available to the market now is the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, which sells for $22,995 and earns 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway. General Motors expects the diesel Chevrolet Cruze to be in direct competition with the VW model, although pricing has not been announced yet.
Michigan Chevrolet dealers may know the highest performing gas-mileage vehicle available from General Motors is the Chevrolet Cruze Eco that is estimated at 42 mpg highway and 28 mpg city. The diesel Chevrolet Cruze is expected to beat those numbers while delivering 50 mpg. This puts the diesel in line to rival other fuel-efficient vehicles like hybrids such as the Toyota Prius.
Dealerships such as Michigan Chevrolet dealers may expect the diesel Chevrolet Cruze in their showrooms by the 2013 calendar year. Consumers may enjoy having another type of vehicle at their disposal to decide from as they choose which fuel-efficient vehicle is right for them.
